About Masdar Institute
Masdar Institute is recognized as a regional and global model for research intensive universities of the 21st Century, while underpinning the growth of Abu Dhabi’s rapidly developing economy across key sectors. The Institute redefines learning and discovery in a global context and set new standards in education, research and scholarship that benefits Abu Dhabi and the world.
Masdar Institute relies on renewable energy to power its campus. This power is provided by a 10MW solar photovoltaic plant with 87,777 polycrystalline and thin-film modules, which occupies a 22-hectare site at the outer boundary of Masdar City.
Abu Dhabi-based Enviromena Power Systems, a leading developer of solar projects in the region, constructed the plant, whose energy is fed into the Abu Dhabi power grid, making it the largest grid-connected solar plant in the Middle East. A photovoltaic rooftop PV array above the buildings also helps provide 30% of the base electrical load of the campus. Raised above the laboratories and residential apartments, the array also helps to provide additional shading to the streets and public realm, while at the same time reducing the amount of solar heat absorbed by the heavily insulated roofs.
